Wise Fool's Pub, Chicago, IL - May 2002
FREEKBASS / Body Over Mind
Aight y'all I had to cop this one at a show. I was at this place called the Wise Fools' Pub. Some not so wise fool they hired up here named Rufus was trippin about the guest list, and I caught 'em slippin at the merchandise table. I copped one of the Freekbass press kits, with a c.d., stickers and all kinds of shit. But straight up. I was AMAZED by what I saw. These guys are bringing the FUNK like I have never seen. I am only 22 so I never had the privilege (my fault if I mis-spelled that) to see Bootsy Collins, Parliament, or none of them. But it straight up sounds like the music my moms used to bump when we had these loud ass parties and then some. It's P-Funk that has a modern twist to it with some Hip-Hop and Reggae digressions.
I personally feel like FreekBass is the tightest band I have gaffled so far this year. They present themselves like superheroes on the album. They have personas and all that but the music will leave your ass SPEECHLESS. Its that funk that Dr Dre be samplin' all the time, with the moog and all that; I think I even hear a Theremin in some of the songs like the Beach Boys used on Good Vibratio...well (f) that I'm representin' Hip-Hop now, gots to keep it real you know what I'm sayin? Anyway the lyrical content is real introspective, and the album takes you through different paces. I can't really say enough about this joint, because it really caught me by suprise, like the time I heard Slayer's Courts for the Criminally Insane. Well it don't sound like that, but its still real dope. I'm just sayin'..... damn, you know?
Now in all fairness I didn't get to stay for the concert because I usually break out after I cuff merchandise. I had to get this c.d. and then I get home and find out that they are being pushed on the Bootzilla Record label!! That's Bootsy Collins HIMSELF, pushing this cowboy-looking muthafu&&a.. Aww naw I wish I'd have hung around but I'm glad I copped their stuff. You should too.
Hit they ass up. This info was in the press kit:
