Freekbass funk 'Body' classic get-that-body-movin'-party music

* * * ½ out of 5

Executive producer Bootsy Collins turns up to chant an introduction to his protege, bassist Chris "Freekbass" Sherman in "Hear Me Play". And it's the music of Mr. Collin's, George Clinton's P-Funk, mid-'80s Prince and even the funkier side of the Talking Heads. (in Mr. Sherman's vocal delivery) that informs Body Over Mind.

The title cut, with its voice synthesizers and vintage grooves recalls Zapp and Midnight Star. There's some rapping in "Thang", but for the most part, Body Over Mind sticks to the classic funk that made Mr. Sherman's old band SHAG such a rump-rattling good time. Some world-class party music just in time for summer.
